Our Employee Stories
Don’t just take our word for it! Here’s what our employees have to say about working at Barcan+Kirby.
“My first interaction with Barcan+Kirby was at a law fair hosted by the University of Law in Bristol. My first impression was that this was a firm who truly valued their employees and encouraged their career progression with utmost loyalty. Since then, my views have not changed and I have come to realise how lucky I am to be a part of Barcan+Kirby.
I applied for the Summer Vacation Programme and it was the most amazing opportunity in which I visited all six offices and learnt from Paralegals, Trainee Solicitors, Associates and Partners in every department. I noticed that every office had the same ethos and values, which is a true reflection of the unity of the firm and its employees.
Towards the end of the programme, I spent a day in the Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence department. Upon receiving feedback for a task I completed, a Partner asked if I had thought about applying to be in their team, and a month later I joined the firm as a Paralegal! I recently started studying for my LPC part-time whilst working full-time as a Paralegal. It has been really challenging to balance my work and study commitments but everyone has been so incredibly supportive. I couldn’t have a better team!
I look forward to further developing my career with Barcan+Kirby and my next step is to apply for a training contract.”
Sinéad Dangerfield | Paralegal
“I joined Barcan+Kirby as I was keen to progress my career at a firm where I could do good quality work but also ensure that I achieved a really good work/life balance.
I was attracted by the autonomy offered to lawyers to develop and also the opportunity to play an active part in shaping how the firm operates. The firm is agile and able to make decisions quickly – something that has been particularly helpful over the last 12 months.
The firm has been flexible in enabling me to work a couple of days a week from the office which is closest to home, which has enabled me to do nursery drop off and pick ups on those days without any major rush. The firm also accommodated my request to work 90% of my hours, which has helped with childcare. It really is a firm where work/life balance matters.”
Gareth Hughes | Senior Associate
“Having originally joined Barcan+Kirby as a temporary admin assistant, the firm has helped me to progress my career and develop as an individual. It’s a pleasure to be able to work in such a friendly and supportive environment where personal development is encouraged and valued. As a trainee solicitor, I’ve been involved in a wide range of interesting work across a variety of legal practices. No two days are ever the same!”
Ella Bartley | Trainee Solicitor
“Since I started at Barcan+Kirby I’ve had their full support in allowing me to progress further with my career and supporting my CILEx studies.”
Abi Harrison | Paralegal and Team Leader
“I joined the firm as a Receptionist in 2002. Since then, I’ve been given the opportunity to train with experienced lawyers and qualified as a Chartered Legal Executive in 2009, which was funded by the firm.
Throughout my time with Barcan+Kirby, I’ve also been able to study and gain further professional qualifications in my practice area. There’s great support from colleagues, and this makes for a very positive working environment. The firm’s flexible working policy also means that I can balance the demands of my job to fit in with my childcare needs.”
Donna Spear | Chartered Legal Executive
“I joined Barcan+Kirby in 2006, and trained with the firm until I qualified as a Solicitor in August 2008. Since then, I have progressed my career with Barcan+Kirby and became a Partner in 2018 whilst on maternity leave with my first child. I’ve seen a lot of changes since I first joined, but I’ve stayed with the firm as I have felt supported, listened to and for me, crucially, there has been the opportunity for development and progression.”
