Summer Vacation Programme
If you are in your second or final year of a law degree, studying for your Graduate Diploma in Law or the Legal Practice Course and are looking for an opportunity to gain hands-on legal experience, our Summer Vacation Programme is perfect for you.
In 2022, we are holding a virtual Summer Vacation Day in place of the two-week in-person programme. We are hoping to be able to return to an in-person programme in 2023.
When can I apply for the Summer Vacation Day?
We will be opening applications for our 2022 programme in January 2022, with a closing date of 3rd June 2022.
When will the Summer Vacation Day take place?
Our virtual Summer Vacation Day will take place on 14th July 2022.
What happens during the Summer Vacation Day?
In 2022, we will be following the structure of our successful virtual Summer Vacation Day held in 2021.
We will offer up to 20 students a place on our virtual one-day programme.
You will spend time with our Board members, then each department will have a session to talk to you about what their job looks like. After each talk, you will visit a virtual breakout room to discuss a scenario you will have been sent before the day. There will also be lots of opportunities to ask questions.
Later in the day, you will hear from our previous and current Trainee Solicitors, who will give you some hints and tips and a real insight to what a training contract looks like at Barcan+Kirby.
How is the Summer Vacation Programme structured?
In 2023, we hope to return to our in-person Summer Vacation Programme.
This bespoke two-week programme allows you to spend time in each of our departments across a number of our offices located around Bristol. You will gain experience in all areas of law we cover, giving you a real insight into what it is really like to work for a mid-sized legal practice.
On your first day, you will have a group induction which will provide you with an overview of the firm structure, information on the work undertaken by each department and an insight into the inner workings of a mid-sized legal practice.
You will also be provided with your programme timetable and be allocated a designated colleague who will look after you during your time with us.
During the programme
Throughout the programme you will be asked to complete work on live matters, ensuring that you are gaining the best possible experience during your time with us.
In addition, you will be given the opportunity to complete a number of tasks associated to each department, which we hope will enhance your understanding of each area of law and help you to better understand the area of law you are most passionate about.
You will also be asked to complete a research task in preparation for a presentation at the end of the programme.
At the end of the programme
At the end of the programme, you will present the findings of your research task to a select group of colleagues who will offer you advice and guidance on your presentation, in addition to HR providing you with detailed feedback gained throughout your time with us.

Since completing my LPC, I have found it difficult to know where to start with regards to kick-starting my career and the Trainees were really helpful in providing me with an overview of the process, some tips on applications and also what I need to do next.”
