We asked Anna…

It’s International Women’s Day, and we’re celebrating our Executive Partner, Anna Wilson.

What is International Women’s Day?

Although the origin of International Women Day’s is a little unclear, it can be traced back to 1908. It is a global holiday that celebrates women and continues the push for gender equality.

We believe that women should be celebrated every day of the year, but IWD is the perfect opportunity to share the inspiring work of women throughout history and continue championing women’s rights.

We asked Anna…

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made; to call for ongoing change; and, to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries, communities and professions.

Do you have any advice for women at the start of their legal career?

A career in law is an opportunity for talented females to make their mark and carve out a role for the long term.

Many law firms have put into place proactive measures to support women at different points of their career and bring more women up to Partner level.

I would say that it’s important for women entering the profession to choose their first job carefully and consider how these choices will have an impact later on.

Take time to find a firm with a genuinely supportive culture which will:

  • Act as a launch pad and help in the early stages of building a career.
  • Offer support to help realise goals.
  • Invest in the real person and the career.
  • Promote an honest work life balance. This will be crucial when it comes to dividing attention between a career and family.

What’s the biggest challenge you have faced as a woman in law?

I have been fortunate throughout my career to have worked with supportive and encouraging colleagues. However, my biggest challenge was navigating a work/life balance as a Partner during my two periods of maternity leave, and when my children were young. It is for this reason that I am passionate about supporting flexible working at Barcan+Kirby.

How have your experiences moulded our Barcan+Kirby Values?

Our Values have been developed and solidified because of our unified vision as a Partnership collective to promote an excellent culture for our people and our clients. My experiences have taught me that to work in a firm that is honest, supportive, nurturing and kind, is of the utmost importance.

Who are your female role models?

Any woman who makes a difference, whether it is in the little things she does in her everyday life or the grand gestures made in the public eye. And in seeing the value in herself.
