Clinical Negligence Legal Secretary – Bristol City Centre
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Legal Secretary to join our award-winning Clinical Negligence team in central Bristol.
You will be providing secretarial services for senior fee earners with complex caseloads and be given exposure to high-profile claims of maximum severity in a well-resourced and well-supported environment.
You will have the opportunity to work with a team that is highly ranked in Chambers and Partners UK and Legal 500. Several members of the team are recognised by both legal directories for their expertise and are accredited by AvMA and the Law Society.
The team comprises two Partners, three Senior Associates, one Associate, one Solicitor, three Paralegals, one Trainee Solicitor and four Secretaries.
The role
This is an exciting opportunity to work with a leading Clinical Negligence team to provide valuable and direct secretarial support to enable the team to operate at optimum efficiency. At times, you may also be asked to assist the Personal Injury team.
This secretarial role will include:
- Typing from dictation, creation of documents, collation of enclosures using SOS Connect to manage current and archived matters and client data.
- Liaising with clients, the Legal Aid Agencies, insurers, the courts and others.
- Preparing applications for funding under supervision (both ATE insurance and Legal Aid).
- Requesting medical records.
- Completing forms of authority and other basic forms.
- Preparation of trial bundles and management of documents including the delivery and collection of these to the court and other parties.
- Preparing bundles for experts including collation of medical records.
- Organising meetings and conferences with Counsel and travel arrangements when necessary.
- Taking telephone messages.
- Maintenance of file format and content in accordance with the Office Manual.
- Assisting with reception duties when required.
Accounts procedures:
- Ensuring all invoices are correctly added to the ledger and paid in good time.
- Obtaining payment on account from the Legal Aid agency.
- Providing costs draftsmen with all information required for an accurate bill to be drawn up.
- Requesting transfer of money between client and office accounts.
- Any other reasonable duties as directed by your manager.
You will also be encouraged to get involved with marketing and business development activities on behalf of the department.

The ideal candidate
The ideal candidate will:
- Have recent secretarial experience. Working in a professional legal or insurance environment is desirable but not essential.
- Have strong administration skills.
- Be able to manage your time effectively and be able to prioritise urgent work.
- Be IT literate, competent with typing and be confident using and adapting to new systems and processes.
- Communicate effectively with people at all levels, over the phone and face-to-face.
- Enjoy working as part of a team and help and support others.
- Have the ability to convey information accurately.
- Be able to work calmly and maintain a disciplined approach.
- Be comfortable working in a busy environment displaying the firm’s values at all times.
Location and working hours
- The role is based at our Prince House office but with the option to apply for hybrid working upon successful completion of your probation.
- Full-time but we are willing to consider applicants who wish to work on a part-time basis (minimum three full days).
