Compliance and Risk Officer

We have a new opportunity for a Compliance and Risk Officer to join the firm as an integral part of the Compliance and Risk team. You will provide support to the Head of Compliance and Risk on regulatory and compliance matters, monitoring risk trends and compliance developments, and helping to ensure the firm complies with all SRA, Lexcel and general regulatory obligations.

The team comprises the Head of Compliance and Risk, a Compliance Consultant, and a Compliance and Risk Assistant. They support the business day-to-day with queries in areas including anti-money laundering, conflicts, data protection, complaints and regulatory standards. This team is an integral and respected part of the firm and key to protecting it from risk.

The successful candidate will report directly to the Head of Compliance and Risk.

The role

You will support the Head of Compliance and Risk with duties to include:

  • Staying updated on relevant regulations and internal policies.
  • Helping the firm maintain compliance with the SRA Standards and Regulations.
  • Ensuring the completion of file audits in accordance with procedures.
  • Ensuring the firm’s ongoing compliance with the Lexcel standard.
  • Maintaining and updating complaints and preparing preliminary decisions on final responses when required.
  • Supporting the Head of Compliance and Risk in submitting complaints data to the SRA.
  • Monitoring negligence claims and supporting the Head of Compliance and Risk in liaising with insurers.
  • Providing cover for new starters and departmental training when required.
  • Preparing data for quarterly risk meetings.
  • Drafting, reviewing and revising policies, procedures and controls across the firm as required.
  • Providing HR support to the team when needed.
  • Assisting with staff queries about money laundering and source of funds/wealth.
  • Preparing suspicious activity reports for submission to the NCA.
  • Monitoring high-risk matters.
  • Monitoring for changes in data protection law and disseminating training when required.
  • Preparing reports of data breaches to the ICO and SRA.
  • Recording data breaches and reporting patterns to Heads of Department when required.
  • Identifying and reporting breaches of the SRA Accounts Rules.
  • Monitoring the bribery register.
  • Reminding staff about their obligations under the Bribery Act and disseminating training when required.

  • Confidence in using and adapting to new systems and processes.
  • Experience of using a Case Management System

Although this position is open to qualified lawyers, applicants do not need to be legally qualified as long as they can demonstrate a high level of experience when it comes to handling compliance matters, preferably with time spent in a managerial or team leader role.

Computer literacy is essential for this role, particularly Microsoft Office.

Location and working hours

  • Full-time (office hours are 9am – 5.15pm, Monday to Friday) although part-time work and/or a job share may be considered for a suitable candidate.
  • The location for this role is flexible.
  • Option to apply for hybrid working upon successful completion of your probation.
