Citizen 2025 | Lifting the lid on how we live, work and play

  • Posted

In 2015, we cast our minds to the future with the launch of our ‘Citizen 2025’ report, considering how we might ‘live, work and play’ in 2025 and what the impact would be on making legal services future-fit.

A decade on: did we get it right?

This year, to celebrate our 10th year operating as Barcan and Kirby, and it being 10 years since ‘Citizen 2025’ was written, we revisit the research in our report to see if our predictions came true.

Over the next six months, we’ll be revisiting our original report and looking at what the status quo is now. Covering everything from an ageing population, care, capacity, family, employment and property.

Unforeseen shifts

Of course, in 2015, few could have predicted just how much change would occur during the decade that followed, with one of the most significant events of the 21st Century arriving in 2019 in the form of the Covid-19 pandemic. The rate of geopolitical change has also been almost unprecedented during the past 10 years.

While this level of change and the human cost of the pandemic cannot be overlooked, the way in which people have adapted and evolved should also be commended. People have embraced considerable changes to how they live, work and play, and many have taken advantage of the rapid adoption of commercial technology to work how and where they want. With a ‘live longer’ society and advancing healthcare, the over-65s are also living far richer and more complex lives with new opportunities.

In our original research in 2015, we conducted market research with 2,000 adults across the UK to examine their views on family, work, employment and later life. We also explored the views of 40 lawyers across our firm from the Family, Property, Wills and Probate, and Employment teams.
