Court of Protection team wins LABC award for property adaptations
We are delighted to share that our Court of Protection team has won the LABC Building Excellence Award for ‘Best Residential Conversion or Alteration to an Existing Home’.
The team, led by Tom Sharkey, won the award, alongside PLG Consultants Ltd and Mi Design Construction Ltd, for adaptations to a client’s home in Devon.
The project
Tom and the team jointly acquired the property in Devon with PLG (disabled property specialists), who altered and remodelled the property to create accessible accommodation for a wheelchair dependant client. The client, for whom Tom is the Deputy under the Court of Protection, has significant disabilities and requires significant 24/7 care. The alterations provide a live-in space for the 16-year-old, his family and his support team.
The alterations include an indoor pool building for water-based physiotherapy; previously, our client had to travel to another facility for this therapy; a challenge that he no longer has to worry about.
The work has transformed the property and made a huge difference to our client and his family’s lives.
Working with PLG
The specialist team at PLG are our Court of Protection’s go-to choice for property searches, adaptation and project management, as well as all the planning permission and architectural work needed to bring a project into being from the design phase.

Our solicitors also worked with a builder who already had a connection to our client’s family and they too went above and beyond to complete the work to the highest standard.
“The motivation behind this project was to provide the best environment for our client to live in, with space for their family but also for their 24/7 support team. They now have everything within easy reach at the property, which has all been designed around meeting their needs.”
– Tom Sharkey, head of our Court of Protection department
Further information
The Court of Protection safeguards the rights of vulnerable people and has the authority to appoint a Deputy to manage someone’s affairs when they lack the mental capability to do so themselves.
If a family member or loved one cannot fulfil the role of Deputy, our solicitors can act as a professional Deputy; this is particularly common in cases where the person has lost capacity due to a serious accident or unexpected injury, such as cerebral palsy or a brain injury.
