Paramedic and ambulance complaints
Paramedics and ambulance crews are often the first medical professionals to respond to a serious accident or emergency. While generally they provide excellent care, if they make a bad decision about treatment it can have serious implications for the patient.
If you feel the level of care you or a loved one received from the ambulance service fell below the proper standard, you can make a formal complaint through the NHS complaints procedure.
Whilst limited, there are certain medical problems which the ambulance staff should be able to identify and treat at the scene, as well as situations they are trained to handle.
However, amongst others, the following mistakes by paramedics might give you grounds for an ambulance service complaint:
- Communication errors between the ambulance and hospital
- Misdiagnosis of conditions such as heart attacks or strokes
- Delay or failure to treat an illness at the scene
- Delay or failure in taking a patient to hospital
Making a complaint about ambulance services
If a paramedic or ambulance crew were negligent in their treatment of you or a loved one, you have the right to complain. You also have the right to have your complaint investigated and be given a full and prompt reply.
