We understand that choosing where to undertake your training contract is a huge decision. That is why it is so important that you consider your options and think carefully about the type of firm you want to train with and the areas of law that most interest you.
At Barcan+Kirby, our trainee solicitors are an important part of our future. Trainees are given an advanced level of responsibility from day one, and we consider our trainees to be integral members of our teams, undertaking real work for real clients from the outset.
Trainees are supported and supervised by a number of individuals throughout the contract, many of whom are leading practitioners in their field.
At the end of the contract, we hope to provide qualified roles to all of our trainees where possible. Our commitment to developing talent does not end on qualification. As a firm, we have a number of further develop opportunities such as our Associates Academy and Staff Development Programmes that provide you with an opportunity to progress through the firm.
What are we looking for in our Trainee Solicitors?
In line with our aim to nurture and “grow our own” talent, we see our trainee solicitors as possible future Partners in the firm. We look for qualities of intelligence, ability to think laterally and objectively, resilience, ability to get things done, to get on with people, and have great teamwork skills.
While academic ability is important, it is not the be all and end all, and experience is equally important. Generally, we will look for people with the right type of experience in the right type of firm.
Many of our successful trainee solicitors will usually have had some months or years of paralegal experience behind them so they can hit the ground running, but this is not essential.
We do require you to have:
- Passed or are due to pass the Legal Practice Course prior to the commencement of the training contract
What to expect during your training contract
Each year the firm offers a small number of candidates the role of trainee solicitor, to ensure that the training provided is as tailored and comprehensive as possible.
On day one, you will undertake a half-day induction where you will meet members of staff that are going to be instrumental throughout your training contract.
You will be provided with your trainee solicitor pack that details comprehensive advice and guidance on the training contract process, from induction to qualification. You will then spend the remainder of the day meeting your first seat trainee supervisor and other members of the team.
During the training contract, trainees will gain experience in four separate departments (seats). The duration of each seat is six months, with seat rotations taking place in March and September of each year.
Trainees are required to complete at least three seats from the list of core seats below:
For the fourth seat, trainees are provided with the opportunity to request their preferred seat option from either the core seat list above or the elective seat list below (subject to availability).
Throughout the training contract, trainees complete a weekly training record and undertake regular meetings with their trainee supervisor. At the end of each year, trainees meet with the Training Principal to discuss their experiences of the training programme and provide their feedback on the programme.
In addition, trainees are provided with the opportunity to join the firm-wide mentoring programme to assist with the development of more defined skills such as networking or presentation skills.
As part of the trainee solicitor programme with Barcan+Kirby, trainees are expected to take responsibility for the arrangement and completion of the Professional Skills Course (PSC). The PSC is to be undertaken and completed prior to the end date of your training contract.
Upon the successful completion of the two-year programme, the firm will assist with your application for admission to the roll of solicitors and hopes to place all trainees in a qualified role where possible.
How to apply
The application process for training contracts commencing in September 2019 will open from 19th November 2018 until 31st January 2019.
To apply for a 2019 training contract, you must be able to attend an interview and assessment centre on either 25th or 26th March 2019 at our Queen Square office.
