Firm launches independent family mediation service

We’re pleased to announce the launch of Barcan Woodward Family Mediation – an independent practice that will enable us to provide family mediation services from each of our four Bristol offices.

The Barcan Woodward Family Mediation team will consist of Partner and mediator Tom Powles – who’ll also be managing the practice – and family mediators Judith Scott and Julie Splaine.

Mediation services will be provided separately to the firm’s established family law services.

So what service are we providing?

Barcan Woodward Family Mediation offers separating couples an alternative to going to court. With the support of an impartial mediator, both parties meet in a calm, neutral space and discuss any issues which have arisen as a result of their separation, such as dividing joint assets or deciding where children are to live.

What are the benefits and advantages of mediation?

How does mediation work in practice?

Mediation is available to both private and publicly funded clients and our initial consultation is free of charge. We’ll also assess whether you’re financially eligible for publicly funded mediation services, in which case mediation will be provided free of charge.

Tom Powles, Partner and head of family mediation services, said:

“Changes to the legal aid system means that public funding is no longer available for most family matters and, as a result, the cost of divorce and separation is going to rise significantly for many.

Mediation provides an alternative way of resolving any disputes that arise following separation – not only is it quicker and more cost-effective, it also offers a more harmonious way of dealing with disputes.

As family law solicitors, we’re firm believers in the benefits of mediation as a way in which to avoid potentially traumatic and divisive court battles.”
