Charity cycle for firm’s partner
On Saturday 8th September, Richard Barcan will be taking to his bike saddle and setting off on this year’s Deloitte Ride Across Britain challenge in aid of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity through The Sam Keen Foundation.
This gruelling trek will see Richard cycling 960 miles in just 9 days between John O’Groats and Lands End, averaging 106 miles per day over some of the highest and most challenging roads GB can offer. During this time, Richard will also be keeping us updated on the highs (and the lows!) of his ride via his blog.
The Sam Keen Foundation holds particular significance for Richard as it was set up in honour of his nephew Sam, immediately after his death from malignant melanoma last November. Sam was aged just 27 and had fought his battle with cancer for 7 years. During his illness, the Royal Marsden Hospital tried everything for him, including cancer immunotherapy. Whilst unsuccessful for Sam, it could make a dramatic difference for many people in the future and all money raised by the SKF will go into developing this highly specialised form of treatment.
The Sam Keen Foundation is receiving huge support and has been nominated as Barcan Woodward’s 2012 charity of the year. In less than a year, fundraisers for the foundation have raised £135,000 and a research Fellowship has been set up in Sam’s name; however a further £40,000 is needed to fund the Fellowship for a full two years.
Richard has set himself a personal fundraising target of £10,000, or £10 per mile. If you’d like to support his fundraising efforts, you can make your pledge through his Just Giving site at http://www.justgiving.com/Richard-Barcan.

Otherwise, we all wish you the very best of luck Richard. Enjoy the challenge, but most of all, keep on pedalling!
